Long ago, in a small hut upon the edge of the forest, there dwelt a hermit. He lived in quiet solitude, though he was plagued by one grievous affliction. From his childhood, each night the same nightmare would come to him. He dreamed of a vast mechanical structure, clad in flesh and living tissue, and within its corridors he would encounter beings made of human organs, who strove to avert their gaze from his own. The hermit grew accustomed to these nocturnal wanderings through the labyrinth, yet never did he cease to wonder why such a fate had been laid upon him. At last, he resolved to set forth upon a journey, that he might learn the source of his torment. He traversed distant lands, delved into the arts of magic, and spoke with the mightiest of sorcerers, yet none could grant him an answer. Thus it endured until a certain night, when, lost once more within his dream, the hermit beheld something dreadfully altered. This time his body was wholly flayed of skin, and the pain seemed near to real. As he wandered the corridors of the labyrinth, he came upon a creature of flesh, and, guided by a strange foreboding, he followed after it. The creature led him into a vast chamber, at whose center lay a great mass of human tissues, shaped in the likeness of a colossal brain. Then did the creature of flesh slay the hermit— and never again did he depart from the dream. His own organs became yet more threads of neurons within that grotesque, living construction.
