At the time, we announced that previously uploaded assets that used generative AI would be allowed to remain on the store, if clearly labelled as AI. However, after further consideration, we have now decided to make the move towards becoming a fully generative AI-free marketplace, which means that all assets created using generative AI will need to be removed from the store.
Why are we making this change?
Since we launched back in 2014, GameDev Market has always aimed to create a space to showcase and sell original work from indie creators. We believe that generative AI assets do not fit in with this and risk devaluing the work that artists, composers, and developers have taken the time to create themselves. By making the decision to remove AI-generated assets entirely, we aim to keep the marketplace focused on high quality, handcrafted content for the game development community.
What does this mean for sellers?
From today (27th August 2025), sellers have four weeks to remove any assets that have been created using generative AI tools. After this period, we will begin removing from the store any remaining assets that we can see have been AI-generated or flagging assets for additional review that our internal checks believe may be AI.
What about audio cover images?
As previously stated, for audio assets, it is still acceptable for sellers to use AI-generated artwork for cover images, as we understand that not all sellers may have the time or design skills to create their own covers. However, asset files themselves must not contain generative AI content.
Next steps
Going forward, we will continue to reject any new submissions that we believe include generative AI content. Sellers who are found to be repeatedly attempting to upload AI generated assets may face further action against their account, which could include suspension or permanent removal from the platform.
We're not an anti-AI company, far from it, we believe AI has a lot of significant use cases, but when it comes to asset creation we feel it creates a number of issues, which we have covered in our previous posts on the subject.
